Synonyms
catecholase, diphenol oxidase activity, o-diphenol oxidoreductase, o-diphenolase activity, polyphenol oxidase activity, L-DOPA monooxygenase activity, L-dopa oxidase activity, dopamine monooxygenase activity, phenolase activity, pyrocatechol oxidase, tyrosinase activity
Alternate IDs
GO:0102316, GO:0036263, GO:0036264
Definition
Catalysis of the reaction: 2 catechol + O2 = 2 1,2-benzoquinone + 2 H2O. This reaction catalyzes exclusively the oxidation of catechols (i.e., o-diphenols) to the corresponding o-quinones. Source: EC:1.10.3.1, PMID:22120533
Comment
GO:0004097 describes oxidation of catechols (i.e., o-diphenols) to the corresponding o-quinones. For monooxygenation of monophenols, consider instead the term 'monophenol monooxygenase activity ; GO:0004503'.
