OBSOLETE. This process is a type of programmed cell death pathway similar to apoptosis and necrosis observed in multicellular organisms. It is characterized by cellular enlargement (necrosis) and presence of many autophagic bodies along with degradation of cellular components (nucleus, Golgi, ER), protein, DNA and RNA.
