OBSOLETE. The process in which interchain hydrogen bonds between two strands of DNA are broken or 'melted', generating a region of unpaired single strands.

Note that this term refers to a geometric change in DNA conformation, and should not be confused with 'DNA topological change ; GO:0006265'.
The reason for obsoletion is that the term represents a molecular function.
