A pale purple color, like that of the lavender flower. Lavender become symbol of homosexuality in the 1950s and 1960s, just as the color mauve was in the 1890s.
A term implying homosexuality in most contexts; a chapter in Gene Fowler's "The Great Mouthpiece" (1931), for instance, concerning the imputed homosexuality of a prominent penologist, is called "An Allegation in Lavender"; and novels and anthologies on Lesbianism, such as "Diana" (1939) and "The Imitation of Sappho" (1930) are bound in lavender cloth, although there may be some connection here with "purple passion." There are said to be "saven recognized stages of homosexuality, from ga ga to the 'deeper tones' of lavender." See "ga-ga" for further elucidation. To have a dash (or streak) of lavender means to be somewhat homosexual or to have a tendency toward becoming more so or entirely so; often contracted to have a dash.
