Groups of Native American tribes and First Nations peoples in North America. The modern Oceti Sakowin consist of two major divisions based on language divisions: the Dakota and Lakota.
Siouan
Sioux
Slur used by colonizers to describe the Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota tribes. It is derived from the French nadouessioux, itself from the Ojibwa nātowēssiwak, which has been said to mean "little snakes" or "someone who is like a Northern Iroquois". The correct collective term is the endonym Očhéthi Šakówiŋ ("Seven Council Fires"). However, note that collective terms should be avoided unless all representative groups are included. Otherwise, list all individual tribes that are represented.
