The sterna in the pterothorax are invaginated and therefore the visible ventral part of the pterothoracic segments are pleural in origin in all holometabolan insects.

Synonymous with mesothoracic venter, that is, used for the ventral portion of the mesopleurosternum below the transepisternal line/sulcus, if such a line is visible. The ancestral mesosternum is hypothesized to be invaginated into the thorax and not externally visible in Hymenoptera, though a mesosternum has erroneously been ascribed to some Encyrtidae and Eupelmidae by some authors.

Sometimes inappropriately used as a general term for the ventral surface of the mesothorax, such as when it is modified into a flat plate with posteriorly projecting lobes.
