Usually a more or less transverse line of weakness across the mesonotum at the level of the forewings that differentiates an anterior mesoscutum and posterior scutellar-axillar complex, and that permits flexion of the mesonotum for flight; often called the transscutal sulcus or suture.

A line of weakness across the mesonotum between the fore wing bases, which secondarily separates the posterolateral angles of the mesoscutum beside the scutellum (see also axilla, scutum).
