The sense of smell in insects is located chiefly in the antennae. The olfactory sensilla of mosquitoes compromise multiporous hair and peg sensilla on the antennal flagella and multiporous peg sensilla on the maxillary palps.
The volitile compounds that have been tested for activity in these sensilla fall into 4 classes:
1) Carbon Dioxide.
2) Unsubstituted and substituded short-chain,aliphatic monocarboxylic acids.
3) Essential oils.
4) Attracttans.
