The neuron with the smallest spike height is sensitive to octenol. This neurone produces bursts of action potentials upon exposure of a sensillum to 2 s pulses of CO2-free air that had passed through a stimulus cartidge containing solutions of 1-octen-3-ol in mineral oil. The sensitivity of the mosquito neurones to 1-octen-3-ol was said to be equivalent to that of lepidopteran sensory neurones to pheromones when tested by similar protocols for stimulus preparation and delivery.
