The involvement of sex pheromones in species recognition by mosquitoes has been postulated by a number of authors but usually has not been confirmed by experimental investigation.
There is evidence for the presence of a contact peromone on the legs of females of the Culiseta inormata. Contact with isolated female legs was sufficient to release coupling behaviour in males. The active substance was non-volatile, heat-stable, and soluble in solvents of intermediate polarity.
