osmotic and ionic regulation

Mosquito larvae are found in a wide range of habitats, from rain-filled pools and containers at one extreme to inland saline pools of high salinity, high alkalinity and unusual ionic composition at the other. The capacity to survive under one or other, or even both, of these extreme conditions is due to powerful transport processes in the epithelia of the alimentary canal and anal papillae which provide homeostasis of the internal environment, making mosquito larvae among the best ionic and osmotic regulators in the animal kingdom.
